Law & Motherhood

Profile

One part lawyer, one part business owner, one whole lotta mommy.

Who are you?

My nickname for the internet is Scylla. I chose this nickname for many reasons, none of them having to do with eating ancient Greek sailors alive. (Though that could be fun.) Let’s just say I feel six heads are better than one.

I am a lawyer who is currently trying to establish a law firm and a title company out of my co-founder’s condo. My goal is to work with my children really nearby.  I am also an amateur photographer (or “the mommy paparazzi” as my husband calls me). I write about my life, the challenges of running my own business, and toss in a few bits about politics and law as the mood strikes me. I often post the pictures I take when I am not trapped at my desk under the stairs trying to work.

I am 34 years old. I love my thirties. They are a damn sexy decade to be. I came into my own when I hit 30. I am thrilled and excited to be past the awkward and uncertain blush of youth. (Though not so thrilled with gravity’s effect on the body after that initial blush of youth but who needs all that perk anyway?)

Why do you blog?

I began this blog as a way to stay connected with my family. I moved out to New Jersey from Colorado in 2006 when my husband was offered a great career opportunity. I was a recent law school graduate, had just finished taking the bar, and was expecting our second child. Blogging began as a way to ease the loneliness of that transition. Now I am back in Colorado, and have over 575 posts under my belt. Blogging has become something more powerful than a connection to friends and family. It has become a way to make the invisible aspects of my life visible. Parenting is often thankless and isolating. Connecting with other parents via blogging has made my ‘office’ a place full of fantastic personalities and great camaraderie. It has kept me sane.

What do you blog about?

Primarily I blog about parenting. I try to be as honest as possible, though I often omit details that would truly make my kids and husband kill me if they read them. I won’t sugarcoat parenting though, sometimes it sucks (and not well). It is the most challenging, the most thankless, and the most rewarding job I have ever had.

I blog about the nature of working from home with children, and the frustrations and excitement of starting a new practice. I blog about the law and the environment, and the cases I am working on when doing so doesn’t violate privilege.

I write about migraines, which I have been fighting since I was twelve, and my attempts to conquer them. The most recent new topic is gluten-free eating.

Do you participate in any memes?

I used to enjoy participating in a few weekly meme’s such as Haiku Friday, and Weekly Winners from time to time. Lately getting together the time to blog regularly has been a challenge, much less blogging on schedule in the meme-o-verse.

What is your attitude towards comments?

I love comments!! They make me so happy!! I would love to comment on everything I read. Sadly, I must confess, I am the penultimate lurker. I comment when I can think of something clever, or at least not lame, to say. Please know that I follow you when you comment, and I do read your stuff.

These are the definitions I feel fit me at the moment:

I am a stay at home/work from home mother of two. I am a dog owner and a cat slave. I am a wife, a lawyer, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a kleenex, a napkin, a pooper scooper, a housemaid, a laundress, and a wipey (ah those endlessly useful pre-moistened cloths). I am an entrepreneur and an environmentalist. I may be insane, if not, I am certainly on my way there. I am a burgeoning gourmet cook (not chef, I don’t aspire that high) and foodie. I am a blogger.

Where else can you be found?

I can also be found posting occassionally for Attachment Parenting International on their blog API Speaks.

Sorry, I’m catching up on my reader today and keep responding to your posts! I wanted to just throw out there that while you have a Twitter profile, it seems you don’t use it. There is a big community of solo lawyers on Twitter now who may really help you on your journey to being a work at home lawyer. I’m @halosecretarial and I’d be happy to direct you to some great people to follow (like @scartierliebel or @carolynelefant for starters)

Hi, Scylla – LOVE your blog! Looking forward to seeing more of it after you get settled into your new home in WordPress, where I just “moved in” myself, but being a blog embryo, I’m not ready for my “coming out” party just yet LOL.

It made me smile to read about your aspirations to work at home in your pajamas with your kids “nearby.” I had an instant vision from one of my favorite all-time YouTube videos …

Multitasking at its best LOL. Best of luck with your new practice – looking forward to reading your musings!

Thank you Julie! It took me a while to see your kind invitation but I finally went and checked Mamapedia out! If I can think of anything clever to say, I will happily submit it to your blogspace.
